St Cecilia Music and Liturgy Workshop report

On 22 November, about fifty people drove to St Elizabeth Ann Seton parish for a short day full of activity.

From as far as Nogales, parish musicians gathered to meet one another, learn about the fledgling Office of Worship and the USCCB document “Sing to the Lord,” study their liturgical crafts, and pray.

The day began with a Eucharistic liturgy and ended with a prayer and commissioning service, Bishop Kicanas having carved a generous portion of time to inspire and bless musicians in attendance.

Fr Miguel Mariano, director of the Office of Worship, presided at the opening Eucharistic liturgy, welcomed participants to this inaugural event of the Office of Worship, and taught a liturgical breakout session. Sr Lois Paha, OP, director of the Department of Pastoral Services, led a session on music with texts from St Paul the Evangelist. Grace Lohr and Maureen Aiken taught singers how to use and develop their vocal instruments. Charles Lohr instructed guitarists. Dr Lani Johnson trained choir directors and choir singers.

Keep your eyes peeled for other opportunities from the Office of Worship.

What a busy season!

Since 31 May, we have sung three important liturgies: ordination to the permanent diaconate, ordination to the priesthood, and certification of lay ecclesial ministers. What a lot of wonderful sacred music we learned, on top of the good stuff we already knew from earlier liturgies. Take a look at the events at which we led music for the 2007-2008 program year. Then take a big breath and sit back for a couple of months. See you all in the fall.

- Lani Johnson
